The “On the Path of Freedom” trail in Phocis is a unique historical and nature hiking route that connects two of the most iconic sites in the area of Amfissa: the Monastery of Prophet Elias and the Castle of Salona. This trail serves as a living tribute to local history, particularly to the moments that marked the city’s liberation from Ottoman rule in March 1821, when local chieftains, including Panourgias, captured the castle and freed the region.
The trail begins in the historically charged surroundings of the Monastery of Prophet Elias, a landmark of faith and tradition in the area. From there, the path winds through olive groves, with the earthy colors and fragrances of Mediterranean vegetation accompanying hikers along the way. Among the trees, visitors can spot archaeological remains, such as a Mycenaean tholos tomb, which testify to the long human presence in the area and the layers of history embedded in the landscape.
Along the way, the trail passes the Chapel of the Holy Apostles, where the chieftain Panourgias, one of the heroes of Salona’s liberation, is buried. This site gives the hike a deeply emotional character; it is not merely a walk through nature but also a journey of memory and tribute to those who fought for their country’s freedom.
Continuing toward the town of Amfissa, the route culminates at the Castle of Salona, which overlooks the town and offers panoramic views of Mount Giona and the surrounding mountains.
